Shade Trees Available for Spring |
The Town of Riverdale Park is continuing to offer residents discounted shade trees to plant in front yards. This is a wonderful opportunity to purchase a very high quality tree at a greatly reduced price. Residents that participated in this program last year were thrilled with the substantial size and beautiful condition of the trees, which were selected by a licensed horticulturist, specifically for the Town of Riverdale Park.
All trees provided through this program are native shade trees appropriate for this climate and planting zone. The cost is $20 and must be paid before receiving one's tree. Checks should be made out to the Town of Riverdale Park. Tree planting instructions will be provided to you so that you can plant and care for your tree correctly. Volunteers are available to help elderly or disabled residents plant their tree.
Riverdale Park is a beautiful community with many stately old trees and a wide-ranging species composition. To retain the character and beauty of the town, we must continue to plant trees every year. Many of our largest trees are quite old and will die off in the coming decades. It is critical that new trees are planted now to take their place. Shade trees do best when they are given room to grow, away from overhead utility lines and confining planting strips. In many cases, the best location for new shade trees is on private property. Trees in front yards are visible to all residents and provide public benefits including shade, oxygen, beauty, bird habitat, and storm water filtration which helps the Anacostia River and Chesapeake Bay. Shaded streets provide protection from skin cancer and are proven to calm traffic, creating a safer environment for our children.
