WSSC and Riverdale Park Enter Historic Agreement to Replace 85-Year-Old Mains |

By Chris Davis On June 19, the Town of Riverdale Park and the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) entered into an agreement for the replacement of the water main and hook-ups to individual properties on Riverdale Road (4700 though 5400 blocks), which were originally constructed around the time of World War I. This replacement and others described later are needed due to the deteriorating conditions of the existing water mains. Although this work will inconvenience residents for the next several months, in the long-run, the alternative could be far worse. If the mains are not replaced now, we can expect continued breaks throughout town and a patchwork quilt of utility repairs onour local roadways. As a result of the negotiations, WSSC will complete work by October 15 and will provide additional work crews to move the project forward quickly. Work was projected to begin June 20. Timing has been critical, because failure to complete the CDBG projects on the road by winter would potentially jeopardize up to $750,000 in federal and state funds, which are being used for decorative lighting; new curbs, gutters, and sidewalks; and an asphalt overlay. It was important to work out this historic agreement now, so that the utility company would not be digging up a brand new roadway. The WSSC and town construction will occur at the same time. Additional water main replacement and sewer rehabilitation work is expected to begin in late summer on the following streets, mostly in Ward 4:
The town is still negotiating with WSSC to determine how to replace some of the newer construction that will be damaged by their work. Efforts are being made to ensure that the construction does not greatly inconvenience residents in regard to traveling on our roads or in water service.
