On June 11, the Town Council held a meeting with the Ward 4 residents of the neighborhood west of the B&O tracks and east of Route 1 and Gearline Bryan, president of B&B Youth Home, Inc. The subject of the meeting was B&B's proposal to create a group home to serve four male children between ages 12 and 15 at 5910 Cleveland Avenue. The meeting was well attended. Also present, was an inspector from the Maryland Department of Human Resources (DHR), the agency that licenses group homes in the state. During the meeting, chaired by Christina Davis and attended by the mayor and full council, residents posed questions of Ms. Bryan and her staff concerning the proposed home.

Even though there has been opposition to this home, the license requirements have been almost completely met, according to the DHR inspector.

There is presently no county zoning law that would prohibit this use in an R-55, single-family residential zone, such as the neighborhood that includes this property. If a license is granted (as expected), B&B would have to negotiate a rate of compensation with the state and then seek to fill the home with children from various state and county agencies in need of such a living environment. Ms. Bryan stated that all children will be from Maryland, and she hoped that all will be from Prince George's County. The extended process could take weeks or months, according to the DHR inspector.

At the time of publication, it is unknown if such a license will be granted. If the license is granted, the town and its residents will be watching closely to ensure that the supervision plan established between DHR and B&B will be followed to the letter.
