Dear Editor:

In response to Mr. Rafter's letter (Letter to the Editor for October 2000), I agree Councilwoman Scott is fantastic. I have had numerous opportunities to talk with her at the various town functions. Mr. Rafter should make a point to meet her in person.

However, Mr. Rafter doesn't have correct information, if he thinks all other councilmembers and the mayor were against the community being present at meetings with Eckerd Drug. I was present at all the meetings and I was never aware that townspeople could not attend. Sometimes you just have to get involved in town activities and functions to get a true picture. The newspaper only has so much space and important information can be left out.

As far as a petition AGAINST Eckerd being maintained at the town office--well no one put out a petition FOR Eckerd, so they couldn't possibly maintain something that does not exist. If Mr. Rafter is FOR Eckerd, then he should organize a petition drive and have that petition maintained at the town office as well.

Mr. Rafter is entitled to his own opinion regarding the condition of the old buildings. I personally like them. I speak to many residents of Riverdale Park in the course of my day and I am hearing that they would like small shops and a Main Street Atmosphere. A place they could walk to from their residences. A people friendly sort of place. What I am hearing from the Town Council at the meeting is they want the corner of Route 1 and East West Highway to blend in with the town redevelopment vision which has been in the process for several years and has been progressing forward.

I think the Town Council and the Mayor are doing an exemplary job running this town and protecting us from the kind of development that does not fit our plan as a small town and I believe we will all be thankful in the future that they worked so hard on this project.

Many town governments just let things happen with no thought to the future and then wonder why property values have fallen and empty buildings dot the landscape. Our town is very progressive and concerned about our future and I say they all deserve a hand for all the hard work. There is no reason why the developers cannot work with the town vision and make this a win win situation for everyone.
